Tinder’s Getting AI system in next update

Tinder’s been experimenting with a lot of premium add-ons to boost revenue: it recently shot up and became the number one top-grossing app on the App Store after bringing its paid Gold tier to the US. Now, it’s adding another way to get people to use more Super Likes. It’s offering a curated list of four potential matches that you can pick to send one free Super Like to (or send to all four if you’re willing to pay extra).

The new Super Likeables will pop up randomly, Tinder says, and will only be available to the Los Angeles and New York City markets at first. The Super Like sent via this new feature won’t count against users’ one free daily Super Like. (Users on the premium tier get five Super Likes a day.) Tinder claims Super Likes increase the probability of matching by three times, so you can see how this is all designed to entice you to spend more money (with some mental consequences, says The Verge’s Megan Farokhmanesh).

Tinder claims it’s using artificial intelligence to find your four potential matches based on similarities between the people you’ve swiped right on previously. While that seems logical in theory, many Tinder users swipe right on just about anyone and sort through their actual matches later, so it’s unclear what the selections will look like for people who generously dole out their right swipes.
